What are Pritchard Original Teats and what makes them unique?

26 March 2020

With millions of our product sold, hundreds of thousands of animals have been able to obtain the nutrients that they require, including many orphaned animals that may not have survived otherwise. The Pritchard Original Teat is our teat replacement to help with the weaning and feeding of lambs, kids, and other animals.

Our Pritchard Original Teat is high-quality, durable, easy to use, and versatile. Because of the international appeal and a substantial base of satisfied customers, imitators have begun to appear that use cheap materials, resulting in an inferior product.

The design and materials of the Pritchard Original Teat are specifically chosen and carefully crafted to match the shape and feel of real animal teats to encourage safe, active feeding. They are also designed to be long-lasting and adaptable to different animals and required feeding rates.

There are several components you should look for before purchasing a product claiming to be a genuine Pritchard teat to help make sure that you and your animals have the best possible experience.

What components make the Pritchard Original Teat?

Although the design of the Pritchard Original Teat may seem simple and straightforward at first glance, the ingenuity of the product is how something so small and easy to use can also be very complex. The materials used, the shape, and the various components were all designed and tested to maximise the usage for suckling lambs and other animals.

The Pritchard Original Teat has a reverse taper with a distinctive colouring of yellow and deep red. On the underside is a flutter valve with a small metal ball. This valve works as a seal and allows air to flow in while controlling milk flow. Some older models have an O-rings inside of the cap to prevent leaking, while our latest model of cap has an inbuilt seal which replaces the O-ring and is easier to clean.

While you can purchase dedicated feeding bottles if you wish, there is no requirement to do so when you have one of our genuine teats. They are designed to fit on any standard size bottle for ease of use and so that you can repurpose bottles that you already have around.

How do I know if a product is a genuine Original Pritchard Teat?

Because of the success and quality of our Pritchard Teats, poor imitations have appeared on the market. Therefore, we deemed it necessary to trademark our name, Pritchard. The imitations on the market go by many names such as “lamb feeder teats”. Below is a chart to reference to make sure that you have our Original Pritchard Teat instead of an imitator.

Genuine Original Pritchard Teat

  • Wording on the cap – “Genuine Original Pritchard Teat”
  • Plant-based soft latex rubber nipple with variations in thickness
    • Choose a softer nipple for a weaker/younger animal
    • Choose a firmer nipple for a stronger/older animal
  • New cap has inbuilt seal
  • Flutter valve

Imitation product

  • No wording
  • Moulded silicon instead of latex
  • Seam down sides of nipple
  • Brighter, artificial-looking red that fades with use
  • Does not last as long
  • Tends to be thinner and tears easily
  • May not fit on standard bottle sizes
  • Prone to leaking
  • Little to no customer support
Authentic
Imitation

While the imitations tend to trend at lower prices, this is because of the cheaper materials used. Overall, the number of products that go to waste or simply do not work tend to have a higher cost in the long run.

I found an imitation pretending to be a Pritchard teat. What should I do?
